Winter Travel Capsule: 20 Pieces for 2 Weeks in a Cold Climate

I asked on my Instagram what style questions you had for the season, and a lot of you asked for travel capsules to cold climates. I get it—it can be really hard to pack all those chunky sweaters and boots into a carry-on! It can be a tricky game of tetris to figure out how to pack for 2 weeks in a carryon any time of year, but especially when you’re dealing with bulky items.

My promise to you is that these 20 items (minus what you wear onto the plane) WILL fit into a carryon and still leave room for underwear, socks, and PJs.

Do you know how I know?

Well, I didn't want to lie to you, so after I created the capsule, I went into my closet, followed my own formula, and stuffed it into a suitcase (yes, including underwear, socks, and PJs.)

So here it is, the foolproof formula for 2 weeks in a carryon (using just 20 items):

Bonus tips!

Now that you know exactly what to pack, I have a few bonus packing tips for you:

  • Wear your bulkiest items on the plane

  • Bring a large blanket scarf—you can use it as a blanket on the plane and then as an accessory or extra layer against the cold during your trip

  • Put all your toiletries and tech in your personal item so you can easily access them on the plane

  • If you can fit it, I highly recommend adding a pair of slippers into your personal item (or carryon)

  • Use packing cubes! It’s so much easier to find things like underwear when they’re all together

  • Either bring a laundry bag or use a zipped pouch on your suitcase to store dirty underwear and socks away from the rest of your clothes

  • Use a small convertible crossbody bag (one that can also become a clutch or even a chic fannypack) and wear it on the plane! It’s much easier to locate things like your phone and ID when they’re not just stuffed into a large backpack or tote bag. You can just stick it in your larger bag when it’s time to board (so that you don’t have more than 2 carryon items)
