My GoodDay Sacramento Segment on Capsule Wardrobes & Closet Editing with Carly Adams

My friend and professional organizer, Carly Adams of Tidy Revival, and I were guest experts on GoodDay Sacramento! You might remember her better as my collaborator on The Ultimate Closet Detox Guide (you’ve downloaded yours, right? It’s free!).

In this segment, we talk to Courtney all about editing your wardrobe, switching out your clothes for the new season, and organizing your closet.

What is a seasonal capsule wardrobe?

Missy: First things first, a capsule wardrobe is a smaller, curated set of clothes, generally between 30-50 pieces, of seasonal clothing that all mix-and-match together easily.

Why would someone want to do a capsule wardrobe?

Missy: This method will save you money because you have fewer, more high quality items, which also means it’s more environmentally friendly--and we all want to be more sustainable!

It also makes getting dressed that much easier because you don’t get overwhelmed with options. If you’ve ever stared into a closet full of clothes and thought “I have nothing to wear” you know exactly what I mean!

How to create one for Spring?

Missy: My number one tip is to take EVERYTHING out of your closet.

Carly:  Absolutely. Remove your Winter clothes and store them somewhere else. I suggest using totes to store your out-of-season clothes, like these from Target. They can be stored in a far corner of your closet, the closet in a guest room, or even a garage. If you already store out-of-season clothes, then go get your Spring clothes, but don’t just put everything back into the closet!

Missy: Put things back in one-by-one and make sure each item is something you love to wear!

As you’re doing this you want to make sure you have a good mix of tops and bottoms, and neutrals and accent colors. It really helps to create and stick to a color palette.

How to organize and merchandize your closet so it feels fresh and inspiring each season?

Carly: Once you have your capsule wardrobe, here are some tried-and-true items that I use all the time with clients to organize and “merchandise” their closets. I love the Water Hyacinth bins from The Container Store. For a great budget-friendly option, my all-time favorite is the Variera bin from IKEA - it’s super sturdy. I also love the look of matching hangers -

Missy: I love velvet hangers. Not only are they thin and sleek, but they really hold onto your clothes, so they don’t end up all over the floor of your closet.

Carly: To beautifully divide your drawers, I love spring-loaded dividers like these from Amazon or the Skubb dividers from IKEA - a set has three different sizes!

Missy: you also want your closet to be inspiring. Hang up a mood board, Display books you love and cute dishes for your jewelry -get Creative!
